Ideally yes, you will need a letter of referral from your GP or referring physician. This can be faxed, posted or emailed by your GP prior to your appointment, or you can bring it with you to your appointment.
Patients can usually be seen within 3-4 days of contacting the clinic. Where an urgent appointment is required, every effort will be made for you to see the consultant as soon as possible.

You meet with the consultant who will take a detailed clinical history of your problem. A physical examination may then be carried out. The consultant will then explain what may be causing your symptoms and offer you treatments or arrange any further investigations that may be necessary. The whole consultation and examination will normally last for 30 minutes.
A full range of investigations is available at the BMI The Priory Hospital, which can usually be arranged for you within a week of the consultation.
After your investigations or any treatments you will normally be seen back in the clinic. Follow up consultations may involve a further examination and normally last about 15 minutes.
No, you do not need private healthcare insurance to be seen at the Birmingham Bowel Clinic. Many patients who attend the clinic do not have private healthcare insurance- please see below.
