Consultant Radiologist
Dr Ian McCafferty is a member of the British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (BSGAR), the British Society of Urogenital Radiology (BSUR) and the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR). He has been a board member of the BSUR and has recently completed his term as Chairman of the Educational committee of the BSIR.
He has written many scientific papers and presented work nationally and internationally. He is involved in several national trials relating to colorectal imaging and has taught on a number of national courses and arranged several conferences.
Education & Training
Ian McCafferty undertook his medical education in London, England at University College London & Middlesex medical school. He graduated with a BSc in Immunology in 1986 and completed his medical school training obtaining his MB BS in 1989. After completing his house officer posts he travelled and worked in Australia for a period as a junior doctor. He returned to England to continue his postgraduate medical education on the south coast on a rotation in Poole and Bournemouth Hospitals.
He was appointed Radiology registrar in the West Midlands obtaining full Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) in 1996. He was appointed senior registrar within the west midlands where developed his interests in gastrointestinal, genitourinary and interventional radiology.
Ian McCafferty was awarded a fellowship in interventional radiology at the John Radcliffe and Churchill’s Hospitals Oxford. During this period he consolidated his interests in genitourinary (vascular and non-vascular interventions) and oncological treatments.
Current Position
Ian McCafferty returned to the West Midlands to take up the post of Consultant Radiologist at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham) in 1999. He played a central role in the development of the interventional radiology service at both Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Birmingham Children’s Hospital that now has 8 full time interventionists and a full 24hr emergency cover. He was lead interventional radiologist at the trusts for 5 years. He holds honorary contracts at a number of local trusts, and is frequently invited to mentor interventional radiology procedures around the country.
Professional Memberships
Ian McCafferty obtained his Membership to the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 1993. He is also a member of the British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (BSGAR), the British Society of Urogenital Radiology (BSUR) and the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR). He has been a board member of the BSUR and has recently completed his term as Chairman of the Educational committee of the BSIR.

Management & Teaching Responsibilities
As a Consultant he has been involved in the service development in gastrointestinal radiology and genitourinary radiology, introducing a number of new and novel techniques – his specific interests are CT colonography and CT urography. He is keen on teaching organising a number of the radiology training programs and has been deputy head of the training committee for the West Midlands training program.
